What to Know

Critics Consensus

A caustic, surreal sendup of television and the culture it generates, Max Headroom wasn't around long, but it was ahead of its time -- 20 minutes into the future, to be exact.

Max Headroom: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Ed Siegel Boston Globe Combining the new wave look of Blade Runner, Repo Man and Mad Max with a sensibility somewhere between The Prisoner, A Clockwork Orange and SCTV, Max Headroom is the most refreshing and creative program since Hill Street Blues. May 8, 2018 Full Review Max Headroom: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe Max roams the airwaves of Headroom pretty much at free will; as such, he's a brilliantly hip joke on -- and saboteur of -- the medium that made him. May 7, 2018 Full Review Max Headroom: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Lee Margulies Los Angeles Times The premiere is easily the most original looking hour on TV this season. May 5, 2018 Full Review Max Headroom: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher [E]ven more mindblowing today, for its unwitting prescience, for its daring satire (I can't believe they got away with some of what they got away with on network television), and for its frenetic, and pointedly so, style. Jun 10, 2021 Full Review Max Headroom: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Sharon Eberson Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The pilot lands viewers in a world that feels at once familiar and frightening. Rated: 2.5/4 May 5, 2018 Full Review Max Headroom: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Jeff Jarvis People Magazine I was afraid this superbly strange saga might lose something in the translation. But no. Not one whit of wit or wonderful weird-ness is sacrificed. Rated: A May 4, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

David W Caustic, prescient, great environmental designs, superbly written, futuristic yet familiar and with a lead actor in Matt Frewer who inhabited his role wonderfully. An absolutely classic near future sci-fi series which I adored then and still love today. It was a crying shame that it didn't get a longer run when so many far inferior series were given room to breathe. Still, it's two series left an indelible mark on the genre for those who were lucky enough to 'get it'. The very definition of a cult series.
